The Need For Budget Tablets

When Apple announced the iPad in January 2009, the entry price for the tablet market was set at $499. I saw (and still see) the web tablet as the successor to the netbook, so I assumed that it would go down over time, and we would eventually see tablets settle in the $350-400 range that netbooks sold for in their brief period of atomic glory (see what I did there?) ASUS and Acer are pushing that agenda for the moment, with the $399 Eee Transformer and the $449 Iconia A500. It’ll take

HTC showing off EVO 3D with gold camera ring, other small design changes

It's not uncommon for different regional/carrier versions of the same device to sport some unique cosmetic details, but since the HTC EVO 4G is exclusive to the US, we haven't had a chance to see any OEM variants.

HTC EVO 3D bootloader locked down

Based on the number of tips that flooded my inbox this morning, I'd say that most of you already know this (my time zone in Hawaii puts me 6 hours behind the East Coast, so I've been sleeping while you've all been cursing HTC) but just in case you don't, Android Police has confirmed—presumably by examing the leaked RUU—that the HTC EVO 3D's bootloader, recovery, and kernel images are all cryptographically signed.

What does this mean for all of your hopes and dreams of getting your new phone rooted and loaded up with a custom ROM that hasn't been created yet?

Ecopad Tablet Concept: Let Your Fingers Do the Charging

It’s true that most tablets do need to get charged up regularly, so it would be nice to come up with a way to reduce the need for recharging. The Ecopad concept was given a special award in Fujitsu and designboom’s ‘A Life with Future Computing‘ design competition for its innovative approach to juicing up.

Bento Book

While this scenario has been explored before, it’s the first time that I’ve seen something that might actually work well. The laptop becomes a dock for your smartphone and your tablet, allowing you to seamlessly use different devices without having to sync them. The Bento Book concept goes even further. Without the mobile devices, it’s just a dock. It actually needs the mobile devices to actually become a laptop.

Ringbow

When touchscreen tablets were introduced to the world, people had to get used to a totally new method of computing, with the use of different multi-touch gestures to recreate certain functionalities that were normally done by a mouse and/or keyboard. While some functions were easier to perform with gestures, people still pined for the mouse as an additional input device.
